Deposit insurance in Canada

CDIC vs provincial credit-union funds — who covers what.

Bank and trust-company deposits are insured by CDIC, up to $100,000 per insured category. Credit-union deposits are covered by provincial funds instead — and in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba that coverage is unlimited, with no dollar cap. Ontario and PEI cover registered accounts with no limit; other provinces typically cover up to $250,000.
