How to choose a GIC term

1-year

Uncertain about rates, saving for something within a year, or want to reassess annually. Lock in without a long commitment.

2-year

A middle ground — a better rate than a 1-year without the full lock-in of a 5-year. Good for a goal ~2 years out, or one rung of a ladder.

3-year

You expect rates to fall, have a medium-term goal, or are building a GIC ladder and want more than a 1-year pays.

5-year

The highest fixed rate today, for long-term savings — especially inside a registered account where liquidity matters less.

Laddering tip: split your money across 1- to 5-year terms. As each matures you reinvest at the prevailing rate — regular liquidity windows while still earning close to long-term rates.

GIC questions

Is a GIC safe?

Yes. Bank and trust GICs are CDIC-insured ($100,000 per category); credit-union GICs are covered by provincial funds — unlimited in BC, AB, SK and MB. Protection applies even to non-redeemable GICs. Rows tagged GIA are life insurers' Guaranteed Interest Annuities — insurance contracts protected by Assuris, the life-insurance guarantee fund, not by CDIC.

Redeemable vs non-redeemable?

A redeemable GIC lets you cash out early (usually at a lower rate); a non-redeemable one locks your funds to maturity but typically pays more. If you won't need the money, non-redeemable usually wins.

Can I hold a GIC in a TFSA or RRSP?

Yes. Inside a TFSA the interest is tax-free; inside an RRSP it grows tax-deferred. Confirm you're buying the registered version when you apply.
