Understanding GIC terms

What is a GIC?

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a Canadian deposit where you commit a lump sum for a fixed term — typically 30 days to 5 years — in exchange for a guaranteed interest rate. Your principal can't lose value, which makes it one of the safest ways to grow savings.

Why invest in a GIC?

The rate is locked in at purchase, so your return is predictable no matter what happens to interest rates during the term. GICs are useful for capital you can't afford to put at risk, for laddering fixed-income, and for holding inside a TFSA or RRSP where the interest grows tax-sheltered.

How do I choose a 5-year term?

A 5-year GIC locks your rate for 5 years. Shorter terms keep you flexible if rates rise; longer terms usually pay more and suit money you won't need for a while. Either way, compare redeemable vs. non-redeemable — non-redeemable locks your funds but typically pays more.
